چکیده

RNA:DNA ratios in individual red drum (Sciaenops ocellatus) were measured in laboratory-reared larvae and juveniles (6-20 mm standard length; age 16-40 days) to assess the effects of growth, starvation, and die1 periodicity on biochemical condition. RNA: DNA ratios were correlated positively with both absolute (mm day-') and instantaneous (% day-') growth rates. The effect of starvation was evaluated daily over 5 day periods at three ontogenetic stages (20, 30, and 40 days). Significant differences in RNA:DNA ratios of fed and starved larvae were observed and changes in biochemical condition were detected statistically within 1 to 2 days of food deprivation. RNA:DNA ratios decreased continuously over the entire 5 day starvation period, with relative reductions in RNA : DNA ratios decreasing with increasing age. Die1 variations in RNA : DNA ratios were investigated in controlled (constant) and natural (cyclical) temperature environments over a 48 h period. RNA: DNA ratios were highest during daytime periods (0800, 1200, 1600, 2000 hours) and markedly reduced at night (0000, 0400 hours). Since RNA: DNA ratios from controlled and natural temperature treatments did not differ significantly, cyclical variations in temperature did not appear responsible for die1 variations in biochemical condition. Findings from this study support the use of nucleic acids as reliable indices of growth and condition and suggest that RNA: DNA ratios are potentially suitable measures to assess the condition of wild-caught S. ocellatus.

Condition of larval and juvenile red drum (Sciaenops ocellatus ) from estuarine nursery habitats

RNA:DNA ratios of larval and juvenile red drum (Sciaenops ocellatus) collected from nursery habitats in the Aransas Estuary, Texas, in 1994 were quantified using a highly sensitive ethidium-bromide fluorometric technique. RNA:DNA ratios of wild red drum were evaluated by comparing individual values to a linear regression model derived for starved laboratoryreared red drum. Wild red drum were in...

Effects of variable ration levels on direct and indirect measures of growth in juvenile red drum (Sciaenops ocellatus)

Relationships between somatic growth (length and weight) and two indirect measures of growth (otolith growth, RNA/DNA ratio) were assessed for red drum (Sciaenops ocellatus) under different feeding rations [0%, 2.5%, 5%, 10%, 15%, and 20% body weight (BW)/day] for 30 days. Representative samples from each ration level were taken in 10-day intervals between Day 0 and Day 30 for evaluation of dir...

Habitat triage for exploited fishes: Can we identify essential ‘‘Essential Fish Habitat?’’

There is little doubt that estuarine habitat is important for some exploited fish species, at some times, and in some places. However, it is also clear that we do not have enough resources to conserve or restore all estuarine habitat. Consequently, a simple, quantitative and transparent approach to prioritizing estuarine habitat management is required. Here, we present a general framework for i...

Spatial and temporal variability in growth, mortality, and recruitment potential of postsettlement red drum, Sciaenops ocellatus, in a subtropical estuary*

Survival during the larval and juvenile stages of marine fishes is highly variable and plays a critical role in determining recruitment potential (Cushing, 1975; Houde, 1987). Early life survival is a function of both growth and mortality, and it is clear that these mechanisms act in concert to determine an individual’s probability of survival (Houde, 1996). Individuals experiencing rapid growt...

Embryonic, larval and juvenile development of tropical sea urchin, Diadema setosum

Diadema setosum (Leske, 1778), is one of the common echinoids widely distributed in the Indo-West Pacific Ocean, where it occurs from the Red Sea, Persian Gulf and the east coast of Africa to Japan, Australia and Malaysia. To investigate the developmental basis of morphological changes in embryos and larvae, we documented the ontogeny of D. setosum in a controlled laboratory condition at the In...
